Bronze of a Young Mercury Seated – Circa: Early 1900’s

This is an interesting and unusual little bronze sculpture of Mercury in a seated pose, reflective and contemplative in mood with only his feet clad in winged sandals. This charming bronze sculpture is a small copy of the Roman original seated Mercury that was discovered in 1758 at Herculaneum in the Peristyle of the Villa Dei Papiri. It was possibly the most celebrated work of art discovered at Herculaneum and Pompeii in the 18th century and was reproduced in a number of mediums. The original is currently on display at the Museo Nazionale, in Naples.

This exquisite bronze sculpture is signed on the base with the foundry mark: `Fonderie Artistique en Bronze, B. Zoppo Capri'. This wonderful piece weighs 14.6 ounces is 4 ¼ inches tall (the original and many of the copies are about 20 inches tall). The base under Mercury measures 2 inches by 3 inches. The bronze is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs save some losses to the original applied enamel black paint that only adds to the antiquity appeal to the sculpture.
