Flint Glass Covered Sugar - Sawtooth Pattern - Boston Sandwich Company – Circa: 1850’s

This is a fabulous Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG) Covered Sugar in the very popular Sawtooth Pattern made by Boston Sandwich during the 1850's. This exquisite covered sugar is rendered in flint glass and rings with the characteristic bell tone when lightly tapped.

This lovely piece is in amazing condition considering its age and use with no chips, cracks or repairs save one tiny flea bite on one of the lid teeth – needed a loupe to differentiate it from possible mold roughness. This is a truly beautiful piece of antique glass with the diamond points of the pattern lending a prism like quality to it appearance and a swirl like design which transcends from the lid down through the base of the bowl.

This wonderful EAPG Sawtooth pattern covered sugar weighs 1 pound 7.2 ounces, is 7 ½ inches tall to the top of the lid finial; the bowl is 4 ¼ inches in diameter and the base is 3 ¼ inches in diameter. This terrific flint glass covered sugar would make an important and wonderful addition to any collection or the beginning of a new one!

It is important to note that this beautiful and flint glass Sawtooth pattern EAPG covered sugar came from the private collection of the internationally renowned collector Dorothy Lee Jones, creator and driving force behind the Jones Museum of Glass & Ceramics in Sebago, Maine. This non-profit, publically supported museum was unique for many reasons including its focus on teaching about all aspects of glass making and history in addition to its eclectic and internationally known collection. The museum had strong ties to such organizations as the Smithsonian, Corning Museum of Glass, Philadelphia Art Museum and several others. Sadly the museum, established in 1978, filed for bankruptcy in 2005.
