Extremely Rare Bahr and Proschild Parian with Intaglio Eyes and Open Closed Mouth

Donning her shawl, (the morning is cool) Parian grabs her egg basket. Entering the chicken pen, she throws the feed on the ground. The chickens happily scatter around the yard pecking and clucking loudly. Egg basket in hand she collects today’s eggs. Martha at the local general store always buys her eggs. She knows that Parian’s chickens are healthy. Once the eggs are collected, she heads toward the barn to milk Sassy, feed the pigs and tend the garden. It seems that the chores never end when living on the frontier in 1885.

Description: This is a very rare 19 inch Parian made by Bahr and Proschild. She is marked 22 on the back of her shoulder plate. According to Lydia Richter, in her book on China, Parian and Bisque German Dolls, she talks about the eyes of these dolls. “The eyes of the early doll heads as a rule were painted. With later heads, so-called intaglio-eyes are found in rare cases. These eyes are painted; their iris and pupil were more deeply modeled.”

She also talks about the mouth. “The mouth of the early doll heads were modeled closed and painted. The soc-called open-closed mouth is only to be found with later doll heads from approximately 1875. Here the lips were modeled open and painted of course, the opening between them however not cut out, so that the gap remained visible-sometimes with painted teeth. The open mouth from 1990 had the opening cut out.”

The detail on her blond curls means that she came out of the mold early. Her intaglio eyes are blue with black iris’. She has one stroke brown eyebrows, nicely painted mouth and rosy cheeks. The tops of her hands are painted the same color as her cheeks.

Condition: She has some minor repairs on the bottom of her leather body but otherwise it is in good condition. She has no repairs, restorations, or hairlines on her bisque.

Clothing: She is wearing an old tiny blue gingham dress (it does have a tiny stain on the waistband). It is in good condition. Her bloomers and slip are also old. The bloomers go all of the way to her ankles. She has old white oil cloth shoes tied with blue ribbons. She is also wearing a cotton crocheted shawl with blue trim. All in all, this is one spectacular rare doll and would make a great addition to a collection.
