A pair of very elegant trays, in rich deep dark chocolate tortoise shell With cognac mottles and silver leaf decoration.
The designs are first engraved with the pattern then inlaid with silver foil. In the center of each tray is a classical urn surrounded by a ribbon border. There are four flower and leaf designs on the sides of the oval trays and a script border on the gently curving sides.
These trays would have been used to hold gaming chips. Cards were a very popular pastime played by the Aristocracy in Royal Circles in the 18th and early 19th century in which fortunes were won and lost.
Measures approximately 4" x 3" x 7/8".
Condition good, just a tiny chip on the top side of one tray, which I have pictured, and a flea bite on the other tray. Some minor loss to the silver foil commensurate with age. Circa 1800.
