Raker’s Pointer – 9 ½” Ivory & Shibayama Propelling Pencil – C 1900

A very RARE propelling pencil with a long Ivory shaft inlaid, on both sides, with Shibayama and artist signed in Japanese . The ivory is carved so the pencil will not roll off your desk. A large spray of flowers and leaves inlaid with tortoise shell and mother of pearl. The other side has a spray of leaves and an artist signature, . The silver tip is marked - Raker's Pointer Pat. 14436C.

A very impressive propelling pencil. Condition very good, the pencil still retains lead and can be refilled. Measures approximately 9 ½" long x 1/2" long.

Shibayama was originally a 19th Century family of NETSUKE carvers, their technique of inlaying has seen the name attached to any such work. They used Mother-of-Pearl, Coral, Turquoise, Tortoiseshell and stains on ivory.

Later, craftsmen applied their methods to a variety of products for export. Meiji (1868-1912). Inlay can easily come off, and this makes a considerable difference to the prices.
