Allegorical Pressed Wood Snuff Box – Circa 1800

A Circular Pressed Wood snuff box with an Allegorical scene of a baby ripped from his mothers breast by a Lion. The mother is about to fight the lion to get her baby back while people in the background are fleeing. Written underneath is: TRAIT SUBLIME DE MATER NITE AU 17 SIECLE

The base has an alternating row pattern design. The box has a lift off top and is lined in Tortoise Shell.

The condition is very good. These boxes are often worn down but this has crisp detail and a good patina.

Measures approximately 3 ¼" in diameter x 5/8" deep.

This is a very unusual subject. French, Circa 1800.

This type of box is also referred to as Thunga wood snuff boxes. Examples can be found in the British Museum and in the reference books: European & American Snuff Boxes by Clare le Corbeiller and The Book of Snuff and Snuff Boxes by Mattoon M. Curtis.
