Battersea Bilston C 1800 Enamel – "Peace on Earth" - RARE Patch Box
This is a small box with lift off top. The base is a deep Royal Blue. I have a group picture so you can compare sizes.
The condition is good. The mounts have a good old patina. The inside lid is a little discolored. Probably an old restoration. But minor on a two hundred year old box.
English, enamel on copper. Circa 1800.
Measures approximately 1 ¼ in diameter x 3/8" tall.
Patches were made of silk and in various colours and shapes. There were worn both by Gentlemen and Ladies of the Court. They were a fashion statement in the eighteenth Century. The beauty patches covered pock marks but were also used as a code to signal messages to other people in the court.
