Elegant and unusual, these antique French opera glasses fold with ease and were made to be carried on the wrist like a small purse. Made of glass, brass , mother of pearl, and gilded embossed leather . Circa 1890, marked MADE IN FRANCE, along with the maker on the side mechanism ,.... LA MIGNONNE PATENT BTE S.G.D.G. Besides their unusual folding ability , it's their beauty that makes them truly desirable ! With large, single pieces of natural mother of pearl on both sides, inset in light brown leather, accented with gilded decoration and monogrammed in script in the middle of the eye pieces,...... J. Duvelleroy London.
To open, carefully depress the clasp at the bottom , to close , turn the mechanism on the side to the right and the lenses inside will fold flat. Do carefully shut back in place, while holding the clasp , as while these opera glasses are in wonderful antique condition, care should always be taken with opening and closing old items with these kinds of closures , as it's important to not let them 'snap into place' , instead, hold them and guide the two parts open and shut.
The only condition issue to note, are the small tears on the pleated sides , not significant to the overall condition, operation of the opera glasses, or optics , typical , normal wear for these.
Regarding their optical function, just turn the mother of pearl dial in the middle to focus and the optics will work just about perfectly , especially considering the technology way back when !
