The process used to make silver Niello jewelry is almost as fascinating as the jewelry itself. Made of a molten mixture of alloys , silver, lead, copper and sulfur, and poured onto an engraved surface, creating a beautiful black decoration, in wonderful contrast to the silver..... Sometimes referred to as black enamel, ( which it is not) , it is always black , with variances in shading. A similar process was first used by the Egyptians and Romans , later in Europe, and was most popular in the late 19th Century, also made in Siam, still today.
This particular bangle bracelet is unmarked , silver , and, since it is not marked, I cannot be certain of its origin , It could be Russian , or not ..... I simply can't be sure .I am certain however that it is from around 1890-1900, and, if not Russian , European. .......15.9 Grams of Silver, and though hollow , of a very nice weight and heft. Nice rounded edges , smooth everywhere .Wonderful quality with a pretty continuous pattern all the way around. This piece would be a fabulous addition to an arm full of bracelets , and one not easy to find .
