Outstanding antique figural mixed lace panel or handkerchief features a very fine bobbin lace depiction of Adam and Eve being expelled from the Garden of Eden and a wonderful needle lace border. The bobbin lace figures are beautifully rendered and show Eve covering herself in shame while Adam, depicted with a cover of fig leaves, weeps into his hands and the archangel Jophiel brandishes a flaming sword. The three figures are very finely worked in linen stitch with half stitch highlights and tiny "ladder-work" openings, and along with a living plant, a broken branch and what appears to be a coiled snake at Adam's feet are inserted in a field of twisted-thread mesh with picots and honeycomb mesh inside a border of tiny, spiderweb-like rings. The handkerchief has a fine needle lace outer border with various decorative elements and bars with picots in tiny buttonhole stitches, and is in very good uncleaned antique condition with one pinhole and some minor age related discoloration on the outside edges of the border, measures approximately 15 x 15-inches, the square vignette insert approximately 7 1/4 x 7 1/4-inches.
