Antique Handmade Duchesse & Point De Gaze Lace Collar

Antique 19th Century Duchesse lace collar with Point De Gaze lace inserts. Delicate, feminine and highly decorative, the combination of relatively flat Duchesse bobbin lace with its flowing floral, scroll and leafy sprig motifs and the gracefully layered, textural roses of Point De Gaze needle lace became very popular for collars and other dress embellishments in the second half of the 19th Century. Both laces in this lovely example are finely wrought, the bobbin lace with a nice mix of half- and linen-stitch in an airy field of braided bars and the needle lace with layered rose petals, tiny rings and needle weaving to vary the density of the mesh. In excellent antique condition with two small breaks in the mesh of one insert, measures approximately 36-inches around the outside radius, 17-inches across and 6-inches wide at the widest section.
