Museum Deaccession 19Th Century Valenciennes Lace Sample Display
Wonderful sample display of seven pieces of early to mid-19th Century Valenciennes lace and whitework carefully mounted on lavender polished cotton. This is an old museum deaccession, part of a recently purchased lace collection assembled in the middle decades of the 20th Century by a Maine collector. All of the laces are handmade of very fine threads and both the bobbin lace and whitework embroidery require 10x magnification to see most construction details. The seven pieces include three collars, one sleeve, two lengths of trim and what is probably a cap-back. All, with the exception of the smallest trim piece, have the braided Valenciennes mesh ground and there are very fine examples of needle lace and drawnwork in addition to the Valenciennes bobbin laces. There is a sticker reading "Val lace with embroidery" and all pieces are in very good antique condition with a few small, isolated breaks, measures approximately 20 x 36-inches overall. The large collar measures 17 x 21 1/2-inches and the smaller collar just above measures 8 1/2 x 11-inches.
