Exceptional Circa 1912 Edwardian straw and raffia hat profusely embellished with plumes, silk and silk velvet ribbons and a 4-inch gold-tone metal buckle with cut-steel beads. The body of this classic Titanic Era hat is an elaborate and beautiful construction of split raffia ribbon with twisted straw and folded raffia in a strong but lacy layered pattern. The crown is wrapped with a 2 3/4-inch wide silk velvet and bright blue silk ribbon and is finished on one side with a bow and buckle and the flourish of plumes. There is velvet trimming the underside of the brim and encircling the inside crown opening, a silk drawstring lining above a "Louttit, Brooklyn, New York" label and the hat is in superb antique condition with one very small piece of the raffia/straw on an edge needing a few stitches to tack it back in place. Constructed to be roomy inside the crown to accommodate the extravagant hairstyles of the Edwardian Era, measures 14 1/2-inches in diameter, approximately 5-inches tall, 42-inches in circumference around the brim and 15-inches around the crown opening.
