Chic 1920's Austrian "Grand Tour" purse with genuine tortoise shell panels bound in silver, a gold-washed silver frame (tests to at least 800 silver) and a fitted silk faille interior with removable bevelled glass mirror and silk-covered note pad. This sophisticated evening purse has a front flap and lower cover of beautifully figured and translucent tortoise shell bound with silver cylinder-and-ball trim, a tortoise button-clasp on top and a warm gold over silver frame. There are two compartments under the tortoise flap panel and two pockets, one for the mirror and one for the note pad and pencil, in the main compartment that opens with the button clasp. An included newspaper clipping headed "Society" and detailing a trip abroad for a young New York socialite was found inside, and there is a gold stamp reading "ZUM STOCK IM EISEN WIEN KARNTNER STR. 103" under the flap. This refers to a well-known Vienna landmark and building in that city's premiere shopping district, now home to Tiffany & Co., Cartier, Ferragamo, and many more. The entire interior of the purse is covered in blue silk faille, as is the notepad, and there is a short leather strap handle. In very good vintage condition with some small scratches to the frame, some "silver" loss to the mirror backing, some verdigris/corrosion to the interior snap and some minor abrasions/scratches to the leather, measures 4 1/2-inches tall not including the strap handle and 7-inches wide.
