18K Gold Australian Opal Pendant

Circa 1969. This fabulous Opal is natural, genuine and solid with magnificent color...especially in the sunlight! It has a strong red internal glow with flashes of green, blue, yellow and orange ~ much more than my camera could ever capture! The setting is wonderful and handmade with solid 18K Gold. The person I purchased the pendant from said they had "69" formed around the edge to stand for the birth year of their first child. The child was born in October... the birth stone for October is...of course OPAL!

It is stamped K18 on the bail, and the gold is tested with jewelers acid. It comes with an 18K Gold serpentine 16" chain. I just noticed a small kink in the chain. Fortunately, it is a little over an inch away from the spring clasp...so it is not really noticeable since it lays on the back of the neck. The pendant didn't come with a chain, but I always like to add one so you can wear it as soon as you get it! I am not charging for the chain! (Both pieces are marked 18K. Picture #6)

The pendant is bezel set and measures 1" long (without the bail) x 3/4" wide. Opal Weight: 15.7 ct. Shape: Oval, low Cabochon Cut Hue: Green, Blue, yellow, Orange Tone: Light Saturation: Strong Transparency: Translucent Clarity: Eye Clean Cut: Good

The total weight of the pendant and chain: 6.3 grams.

The pendant is in excellent, vintage condition. The opal is mint and very elegant. You will love how this pendant looks, whether you are starting an opal collection or adding to one...it's a sensational find!

Ever wondered if you're getting what you paid for? Synthetic opal does exist, as well as partially man-made stones such as triplets and doublets.

I highly recommend this web site OPALSDOWNUNDER, it will give you the low-down on how to know exactly what you're buying. (See the article on types of opal for a more detailed explanation of the difference between solids, doublets, & triplets.)

Does the stone have a white body tone, or is it transparent? If so, it's almost certainly a genuine solid, and you're looking at a white or crystal opal. All doublets and triplets are dark in body tone because they have a black artificial backing.

Look at the side of the opal - if it has distinct visible layers, it may be a doublet or triplet (i.e. not a solid opal) In this case; one of the layers will be a thin slice of opal, attached to the dark backing. A triplet will have a third layer, which is a clear, domed layer on top of the opal.

This is a crystal Opal. It is very transparent.
