Vintage Brown Transferware Soup Tureen
Made in the Victorian aesthetic era, this lovely brown transfer ware soup tureen has the markings of Gildea & Walker Potteries Tunstall, Staffordshire England on the underside. It was made in the 1881. It has a Japanese style pattern of Bamboo stalks near a pond with cat tails and birds ascending toward the sky. At a diagonal at the bottom of the design are Japanese geometric patterns There is a round cartouche near the ladle insert of a large leaf design. The under plate has the same design and on the ladle is a berry and vine patter down the handle with a large flower in the bowl of the ladle. The ladle has a very small thin hairline (about 1/2 in.) on the rim. There is craquelure on all pieces, but no chips, other than mentioned cracks, or breaks seen or felt. Overall, this soup tureen set is in very good condition for its age. The tureen itself is 8 in. high by 10 in. long by 7 in. wide. The ladle is 13 in. long by 3 in. diameter by 1 1/2 in. deep. The under plate is 13 1/2 in. by 9 in.
