I've made this piece out of .999 fine silver. For all you biker girls (and I know a few in New Mexico), this would be a perfect accessory for you! I've made an angel on a bike for the main focus with two hearts on the back ends of the bangle. This shows a lot of love for adventure but with a feminine kind of sassy!! Go GIRL!! -- you see a lot of that out here in the West!
As mentioned earlier, this is made out of .999% silver, technically called "fine" which is purer than sterling. Sterling is .925% and contains copper, which is what causes it to tarnish. Fine silver doesn't tarnish, and it's shine is almost otherworldly. As one of my customers put it: "It's like moonlight that has a life of its own."
My goal when it comes to handmade silver jewelry is to create one of a kind pieces, or limited edition works that have individual personalities. No two are ever the same.
For many years I've written contemporary poetry. (I'm a retired creative writing professor with a few books published.) One of my goals is to bring individuality and personality into words that would otherwise be lifeless. The same premise applies to a medium like silver. I see so many silver pieces that are technically superior, but they often lack the spirit of the maker.
I've oxidized the silver in a solution of liver of sulfer. This solution stinks to high heaven--it smells worse than rotten eggs, but after the black layer is sanded from the silver, the recessed areas come alive.
The bracelet was then tumbled with steel shot overnight to harden the silver and to produce a stunning shine. Tumbling also gives the silver a smoothness like river stones.
This bangle should fit most wrists.
