Watercolor seascape with schooner ships
Offered is an exceptional seascape which is signed. Unfortunately I have only been able to discern a few letters after enlarging, contrasting, etc. as it is signed with charcoal.
First, the frame is wood and gesso and it is an very old frame from the 1900's. Along the way someone decided paint it in a tone that reflected the watercolor. It was rather carefully done and I have left it as I found it. Second, it has been matted with an acid free mat and backing since the original mat was not acid free and the back was wood.
The painting is original and not restored. The signature is not sufficiently legible to identify the artist as it was done with charcoal. I think the first two letters may be Gl and the last brandt although with guesswork.
The seascape is enveloping with the glowing sky, three masted schooner ships, dinghies, and the closer view of the dock, shore and building. The scene is 19th century or early 20th. This is a soft palette which glows with the cautious use of yellows, browns and greys. The proportions are correct and the perspective fine.
Measurements of the frame are 22 1/2" high by 31 1/2" wide and the watercolor is 10" by 21". This painting was done with dry technique more resembling gouache. The artist was very talented.
