Antique union california 10K gold belt sash buckle
This is a deeply carved gold belt buckle done around the period of the California Gold Rush which was from 1848-1855. During this period lobbying to join the union and become a state reached its height with California becoming a state in 1850. These buckles were a symbol of support for joining the union and became quite valued. This one shows the eagle above the words UNION and on the bottom two furled Stars and Stripes. On the left we have Athena and I believe Liberty who has also existed since classical time.
The buckle is not stamped nor does it have have the maker's mark. There are initials in script for B.W.. It measures approximately 1 5/8" wide by 2 1/2" long. The mechanism for the sash functions very well and there do not appear to be any repairs. I have had it professionally tested and it is 10k gold and solid.
It weighs 19.3 grams.
