This is a rare 19th Century or early 20th Century Volkstedt bisque/porcelain figural wall plaque in matt finish. This is one of the best high relief plaques I have seen and is museum quality.
I have recently identified this German plaque as being volkstedt and a set of 4 was sold at Christies auction house. (please see last picture) This is 1 of 4 plaques depicting the seasons. The entire set was sold at auction in 1998 in England and fetched over $4,500 U.S. dollars.
The subject of this plaque depicts a mother with sleeping child. The mother and child are sitting on top of bails of hay (rocks) in an open field and the child is resting her head on the mother. Any questions please email me.
This item is superbly painted with enamel and the painting is exceptionally executed. This figural plaque is a classic example of perfection in design, painting and overall appearance.
This plaque is not marked but documentedI date this from around 1900 or earlier. No cracks chips or repairs. .
The plaque is approximately 11 inches round and the round base is 1/2 inches in depth. Colors are crisp and vivid.
I have provided several pictures. Any questions please email me.
