English 1942 Sterling Sentry Military Place Card or Placard Holder, 147 Grams

From a recent estate of 19th and 20th century unusual items, many of which were from Europe as the person was French and had acquired most of her estate in Europe.

This interesting sterling silver figure is hallmarked with the London Sterling Silver mark for 1942. There is also a faint maker's mark to the left of the very visible marks which I cannot identify.

It is a very substantial piece at 147, even given that a very small section of it is likely weighted. It appears to be a place card or placard holder of some sort, executed with beautiful detail. It measures just under 4" high, by a maximum width of 1-5/8".

As can be seen in the photos, the base is absent, and I the residual weighted clay (it wasn't sand but rather a clay type of substance) hyad fallen out. I am assuming that the small section above the bottom section (which narrows) may have some weighted material in it, but the remainder of the piece appears to be solid and substantial (there are two narrow rods which appear at the base which can be seen in the photo).

I have left the piece unpolished, and it has a great patina in person. A couple of minute indentations at the base, but nothing at all that detracts from this wonderful piece.
