This is the most elaborate punched paper sampler that I have seen. The motto is in German. It says, Wenn Trubal einkehrt nicht verzage es kommen wieder bess're Tage. This translates to: When troubles come, do not despair, better days will come again.
Many words are outlined in gold thread, the colors are deep and unfaded, a puffy, silk cherub sits atop real fern and silk edelweiss flowers, and there are gold thread curlicues. Many words seem to be executed in silk thread, because they have a shine to them.
This is also an excellent piece for study, because, as the needle worker obviously considered the work finished, there are a few areas of stamping that have been left unembroidered. Framed it measures 18" by 13 ½".
This was probably one of the original kits produced in Germany where Berlin work patterns originated and its provenance bears this out.
The original frame is composed of gesso and wood which is faux painted to resemble oak. Few pieces of gesso chipped (see photos). The back is board covered with old, dated, newspaper sheets.
Condition: Some spotting and dirt to the punched paper and the cherub has a fine dust layer. The whole is in original condition and speaks to its age! This could be restored to pristine condition by the collector.
Please note the last photo of the other Berlin work that I have. Matching size and special price if both are purchased. Imagine them hanging side by side!
