POETICAL WORKS OF SPENSER. Genuine Leather with Gilt Tooling. Gorgeous!
The Poetical Works of Edmund Spenser / Edited with Critical Notes by / J.C. Smith and E. De Selincourt / with an Introduction by E. De Selincourt and a Glossary. Published by Henry Frowde, Oxford University Press, London, 1912. Genuine, wine-coloured, calf binding with gold tooling along all cover edges, and all pages gilt, with stamped gilt titles on the spine and front cover. 736 pages. Marbled endpapers.
The contents of this book are huge, for, in addition to the works of Spenser, they include a biographical and critical essay, Spenser-Harvey correspondence, appendix of epigrams and sonnets, and an index of first lines, plus other items. All pages are double columned and each work appears to be introduced with a facsimile page of the original work, making it a very attractive book and most useful for the scholar. It would also grace the shelves of any library, home or school.
Condition: Top 1” of front cover darkened and has ¾” closed tear at edge of spine. Approx 1” square on top edge near spine is darkened and slightly rough gilt. On front pastedown the top 1” is darkened and first four pages also. Front hinge is split for ¾” down, rest intact. The remainder of the book’s interior appears Fine with NO foxing or stains. I would summarize the condition as VG++. Please view all photos which accurately describe the condition of this very collectible edition.
