The Dawn's Early Light by renowned historian, Walter Lord (also author of A Night to Remember - the Titanic tragedy). Published by W.W. Norton & Company, Inc., NY, 1972. I believe this to be the first edition. 384 pages with many pages of black and white photos.
The War of 1812 was called, at the time, The Second War of Independence. That was an apt title. This is a fascinating account of the time and its events. "This is a story of blunders and coups, of cowardice and courage - all the components of war." America was "a small, young, and not always wise country struggling again the most powerful nation in the world."
Here is American history at its best, told by a solid researcher and good storyteller. A pleasure to read.
