Richard Henry Dana (1815 - 82) was studying law at Harvard when an eye complaint forced him to abandon his career. He decided to go to sea and out of his experiences came Two Years Before the Mast. It was first published in 1840 and quickly became a classic of maritime writing. This edition is further enhanced by an Intro by Sir Wilfred Grenfell, the eminent Victorian missionary and writer.
