The River Pirates / A Story of China in Revolt by Herbert Strang. Published by Humphrey Milford Oxford University Press, London, 1927. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Decorated boards with red lettering on the front cover and black on the spine. Coloured frontispiece and black and white drawings throughout by Ellis Silas. 176 pages.
The cover design of this book is a little unusual for the time of publishing. It is rather more modern than of its time.
Herbert Strang was the pen name of two English authors, George Herbert Ely (1866–1958) and Charles James L'Estrange (1867–1947). They wrote adventure stories for boys and were staff members of the Oxford University Press.
This book offers a fascinating look at life and attitudes in the British Empire at the time of writing. Boy's adventure stories were imbued with the morals and sentiments of the rulers, but they were also great fun to read and dream about.
