This is a scarce 1870-1880's Victorian paper trade card advertising Calmans Varnishes. It features a dreamy painter with visions of varnish troubles dancing in his head. The back is black and white and carries a smiling face and words printed backwards. When held to the light, the smiling face appears over the sleeping painter's and those unusual words appear as the advertising "He makes the determination in future to use only Calmans Spar Varnishes as they never blister crack bloom or turn white and are universally acknowledged as the best." Great!
