A fantastic example of the work of Jorge "Chato" Castillo, this vintage pre-eagle sterling pendant is an open hand fan with an applied design and openwork details. The naïve style and choice of motif is reminiscent of the folk art of old Mexico.
The pendant is large at over 4-1/4" wide x 3-3/8" high including the bail, making it perfect for display close at the throat on a neck ring. Because of the large size, the fan will easily hold its own against a grouping of sterling or stone beads.
On the back is an applied circle that is stamped Sterling Chato Mexico. Jorge "Chato" Castillo is considered one of the greatest of the Taxco silversmiths, earning the title El Maestro Chato. "He was considered a genius not only for his technical brilliance, but for the variety of designs he produced." (from Mexican Silver, 20th Century Handwrought Jewelry and Metalwork, by Berk and Morrill, page 86).
Minor wear from respectful use.
