Perhaps this detailed dragon was intended for use as a Japanese sword fitting. He appears in a classic unfurled stance, a ferocious look on his face. In one detailed claw, he grasps a ball or globe.
His rippling scales are beautifully complex – overlapping, large and small.
He fits atop a rectangular piece of matching silver tone metal. The pieces are attached with a pair of rivets.
Both the dragon and the back plate do not test as silver. Perhaps they are shibuichi, a low silver alloy that colors differently depending upon the homogeneity of the batch.
The item measures 2-1/2" x 1". It is unmarked.
Condition: the piece had something on the back at one time that left an elongated triangular untarnished area on the back (clearly, this is part of the mystery), the item has not been polished and shows general tarnish.
