A superb antique sterling silver lorgnette with a clear crystal chaton encrusted handle that mimics a delicate flower stem and blossom. An open center trefoil at the tip of the handle serves as the ring for a chain.
The glasses open smoothly when the thin ring just below the lenses is gently pulled down.
When closed, the lorgnette measures almost 5" long x 1-3/4" wide. When open, it measures 4" wide across the expanded glass lenses.
I see 2 desperately tiny hallmarks that I simply cannot decipher. One looks like a French mark but I can't be sure. It has been tested and it is sterling silver.
Condition: the silver has not been polished and is evenly tarnished a nice warm gray, the lenses show some minor scratches, the spring hinge works properly, the glasses close and hold properly as well, no missing stones although some have darkened with age.
