1881 Victorian Aesthetic Sterling Necessaire with Ivory Aides-Mémoire

Simply the best Victorian aesthetic era accessory, this sterling silver necessaire is a slim case fitted with an aides-mémoire made of 3 sheets of ivory held in place with blue grosgrain. A small pencil slips alongside the pages. Across the top of each page is printed the name of the day. Apparently, notes were not to be taken on Sunday.

The front and the back of the case are hand engraved with unique designs that include a postcard overlaid with a circle, bamboo stalks, sparrows, and a diagonal tiled layout.

A personal engraving appears on the front. It reads Matilda from Isabella in florid lettering.

The case edges are slightly notched and scalloped.

Along the bottom edge are the stamped hallmarks which include the Victoria head duty mark used for the years 1838-1890, the lion passant which represents the sterling content, the Birmingham anchor, and the date letter for 1881. The maker's mark is also present but rather worn. It appears to be that of Frederick Marson.

The necessaire measures 3-7/8" x 2-7/8" including the pressure release clasp x just under 1/2" thick.

Condition: typical wear to the silver including a couple of more distinct scratches, the lining is very stained, tears on the thin cardboard sheets that hold the inner pages in place (this shows in one photo), there are pencil marks on the ivory that I have not tried to remove.
