Here is the one of the rarest Louis Wain illustrated books "Tinker, Tailor" with stories by Edric Vredenburg. Printed by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd. London, Paris, Berlin, New York, Montreal.
The book contains "tales of exciting adventure and the entertaining histories of `Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor, Gentleman, Apothecary, Ploughboy, Thief,' the characters being impersonated by Louis Wain's celebrated Cats in a large number of coloured and pen and ink drawings."
It is a hard back book – dark green cloth over boards with beveled edges. It is darker green in person. The front cover has a color illustration paste-down and pictorial stampings. The front and spine are lettered in gold. Gilt pages edges.
It measures approximately 9-3/4" x 7-1/2". There are 136 numbered pages followed by 4 pages (or 8 if you count the front and the back) of advertisements for other Tucks & Sons publications. There are ads for 16 books including Grimm's Fairy Tales, Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales, Alice in Wonderland, and Mother Goose illustrated by Mabel Lucie Attwell.
In addition to the 12 full color illustrations listed (2 are missing from this volume), large black and white drawings appear on each page.
Condition: corners bumped and the cloth has been rubbed away, wear to spine and a tear at the top, owner's name and date (1918) in ink inside front cover, ink stains inside front cover, name and date (1923) stamped inside front cover, many of the pages are foxed, 2 color illustrations are missing, 2 color illustration are loose, 1 is rough along the edge and has a small tear (tear and roughness are primarily in the border), the binding is a little loose but it doesn't feel dangerous or wiggly, about a 2 inch scuff on the beveled edge of the back cover that goes through to the board backing.
