Saint Barbara – Old French Master about 1700/1750
This is an old French painting on canvas depicting Saint Barbara.
The painter depicts Barbara like a young women coming from a noble house, she wears precious clothes and jewelry. She has a sword in the left hand. Normally Saint Barbara is depicted in art as standing by a tower with three windows, carrying a palm branch and a chalice, sometimes with cannons depicted by her side. Very rare are the paintings of Saint Barbara with a sword.
Oil on Canvas, relined on wooden panel. This stabilization measure was done in the past, probably in the 19. Century.
The painting is in very good original condition, I could not find any restorations. Vibrant, very good preserved colors and a wonderful age crazing.
The frame is not the original one, it is younger. It is a simple and elegant wooden frame, gold gilded.
Measurements: 12.6 x 15 inches (with frame),9.411.6 inches (without frame)
Saint Barbara became the patron saint of artillerymen. She is also traditionally the patron of military engineers, gunsmiths, miners and anyone else who worked with cannon and explosives. She is invoked against thunder and lightning and all accidents arising from explosions of gunpowder. She is venerated by every Catholic who faces the danger of sudden and violent death in work
