Micro Mosaic Cross Crucifix Four Roman Views and Dove ca. 1880
This cross is a wonderful Grand Tour Souvenir made around 1880. The cross ends have clover shape. Each end shows a Basilica in Rome: St. Peter, St. John Lateran, Santa Maria Maggiore and St. Paul. These wonderful building views are made of finest glass tesserae. The minuscule tiles are set in handwork – what ability and patience had the worker!
To the middle of the cross a beautiful white dove on turquoise back ground – an incredible micro mosaic work too. The body of the cross is further adorned with fine floral motifs, set glass tiles too. Wonderful colors.
The micro mosaic work is set in silver plated metal. The Jesus Body is fine modeled and made of bronze. Beautiful age patina. Signed on the back side STOCKER.
The condition is very good. I could find only one tile which is partially broken (to the base of the right medallion), slightly noticeable.
The cross measures 6 inches in height and 3.4 inches in width.
