Large Majolica Longwy Charger Dated 1889
This rare piece is made by the French Fayence Manufactory Longwy. It has a very pleasant square shape with cut corners. The charger is hand painted. The motifs, especially those in the middle of the charger, are very interesting. Two doves, a flambeau and a quiver. I could not find any information about a French emblem with this motif, so it is possible the motif is dedicated to the Goddess Diane or a beautiful phantasy motif. There are also some beautiful flower garlands.
The colors are very good preserved and vibrant. Wonderful cobalt blue color to the edges.
The charger is stamped to the base. Round embossed Longwy stamp (visible only the first three letter) the fabrication date 289 what means February (18)89. See please also "Faience de Longwy" by Dominique Dreyfus page 22. The condition of the plate is very good, only some very slight surface wear present.
Measurements: 12 x 9.6 inches. I am also offering a similar caddy. Please take a look.
