Outstanding German Arab Bust by Johan Maresch ca. 1880
A fabulous example of Continental earthenware!
This wonderful and detailed modeled bust is made by Johann Maresch ca. 1880s. It depicts a proud and handsome Arab man. He has an extremely noble features and wears wonderful clothes.
The bust id made of siderolith, an earthenware composed of ironstone clay (usually terra cotta) with an enameled coating. This finish looks so similar to bronze.
Embossed mark of Johann Maresch (J M and some rings) and the number 477 to the bottom.
The condition is very good, no damages or repairs. Just a fine rub to the left side of the hair dress.
The sculpture measures 15.2 inches in height.
Johann Maresch, born 1821 became partners with Adolf Baehr around 1841. Baehr and Maresch Siderolith Fabrik was located on the corner of Teplitzerstrasse & Johannesstrasse, Aussig an der Elbe, Germany. Originally they marked their wares with B & M, but around 1863, they switched to the famous JM markings. During the early 1900's the company prospered under his management, exporting to the rest of Europe and America. The manufactory has closed in 1948.
