Hand Carved and Signed Ivory Netsuke of Man With a Snowman c. 19th Century

This particular Signed 19th Century Ivory Netsuke is of a man apparently pushing over a big round snowman. The expressions are priceless. Someone clearly had a great sense of humor. It is 1 1/2 inches tall and 1 1/4 wide. Netsuke miniature sculptures were invented in 17th C. Japan to serve a practical function. Traditional Japanese robes had no pockets and men needed a place to store their personal belongings such as pipes, tobacco, money, seals, or medicines.

Their solution was to place such objects in containers hung by cords from the robes' sash. The fastener that secured the cord at the top of the sash was a carved, button-like toggle called a netsuke.
