Johann Maresch "Midsummer's Night Dream" Earthenware Gnome Pottery.

Johann Maresch, who was born on July 11, 1821 went into partnership with Adolf Baehr around 1841. After the death of Adolf he married his daughter. They originally used a B for their mark and switched to the JM as on this piece in 1863. They used an "ironstone" clay mixture: a type of porcelain that is more durable, having more strength and weight than fine porcelain and made many gnome figures. Such is the case with this outstanding piece from late 19th century. It is in excellent condition and is an impressive 23 1/2 inches tall, over 11 inches wide with a 3 1/2 inch wide opening. This marvelous piece believed to be entitled "Midsummer's Night Dream" weighs over ten pounds. Fabulous details and character in the faces. Tremendous texture.
