Antique Mezzotint The Ladies Frankland by William Ward-

This exquisite Mezzotint by William Ward (who is regarded as one of England's greatest mezzotint engravers of the early nineteenth century) is sealed behind glass and is in excellent condition. The original frame was damaged (purchased and framed by Wunderly Bros. Pittsburg Pa. early 1900's) beyond repair so I removed the print to make shipping easier and most likely you will want to pick a frame that goes with your décor. The mezzotint measures 22' x 18". A little background on this famous picture from a book about Hoppner written by Skipton in 1905. Originally painted by Hoppner and was in the Royal Academy Exhibition of 1795 and later engraved by William Ward. The picture is the whole length of two girls, in white dresses with sashes, the one with her arm about the neck of the other, seated on the ground with the drawing materials in a fine landscape, while a dog lies curled up at their feet- a glorious composition both as regards to light and colour. The near girl looks towards the spectator with a shyly pathetic wistfulness which is very attractive. Both are beautiful, and both are unmistakably ladies, distinguished by a native dignity upon which only a very rash man would think of infringing. Sir Thomas Frankland had nineteen children, of whom seven daughters grew up, but it is not ascertained which of the daughters were the graceful and elegant originals of Hoppner's picture. This mezzotint is probably William Ward's greatest achievement. Written on the left corner is J Hoppner R.A. in the center is The Ladies Frankland Published as the Act directs March 1st 1797 , by W Ward, Delaney Place , Hampstead Road right corner engraved by Wm.Ward These mezzotints are hard to find- newer lithographs( not in the original colors) can be found but the old mezzotints are at a premium. I did notice that one is at auctions at Christie's in Britain.
