This beautifully hand-painted porcelain brooch is a stunning example of jewelry of the Art Nouveau period between 1900-1910. It has been painted with a soft pastel blue background and then with a sumptuous gold-leaf overlay of an orchid-like center with very thin white edging. The border, also painted in gold leaf, has a scalloped pattern around the edges, and adds much additional beauty to the piece. It's classic in design, and so timeless and can be worn vertically or horizontally. It is in very good antique condition with some wear from age on the gold leaf border. The brooch measures 1 1/2 inches wide x 2 inches in length and the back has a hand-made brass frame with a "C" pin closure, which was typical of much of the jewelry of that period.
The fashion trend back in those days was for young girls to paint their own jewelry, and this piece is just one in a collection that I have had stashed away for more than 30 years in a trunk, believe it or not.
