This special piece is an oversized hand-painted porcelain brooch, very typical of the Victorian era, probably from about 1880, and is both soft in color and design. It's a typical portrait of a young Victorian girl with curls and hat, wearing a yellow dress. She is surrounded by beautifully painted aqua forget-me-not flowers on the bottom half of the brooch and is probably a self-portrait.
It was a fashion trend back in those days for young girls to paint their own jewelry and this piece is just one in a collection that I have had stashed away for more than 30 years in a trunk, believe it or not. It measures 2 ½ inches long x 2 inches wide and is in great antique condition. The back has a hand-made brass backing and a "C" curve closure, was typical of much of the jewelry of that period.
This piece was part of our collection that's been stashed away for more than 30 years in a trunk. It's now time to take it out to share with the world, so enjoy!
