Started by Thelma Archer in Custer, South Dakota, Katy Kraft was once a popular regional ceramic company. Unfortunately, its proven difficult to pin down when the company was in operation. This hat pin holder was also a hair receiver, where strands of hair were deposited inside using the large center hole. Form is an octagonal, cask shape that is covered in a high gloss mottled green glaze. The style of back stamp and casket shape makes me place this piece any time from 1930 to the middle 1940's. Holder measures about 7 1/2" from side to side and 2 3/4" high. Although successful in its day, Katy Kraft items are elusive and are a real coup when found.
