Maioliche Deruta Horse And Foal Majolica Pitcher ~1920's

Offered here is an early example of Maioliche majolica. Maioliche was formed in the early 1920's by a consortium of businessmen. They were trying to re-establish Deruta as a pottery center. This would be one of the earliest pieces from that company and was made in the town of Deruta.

One side has a stylized floral decoration and the other has a raised relief horse and foal. The piece is 9 1/2" high and measures about 8" wide. The pitcher has a pedestal base, which is marked as shown.

The glaze is a white body with rich green accent highlights and trimming.

There are some glaze skips and the base shows glazing thinness. This thinness in glaze is also above the footed base. There is a glaze flake on the rim and back leg of the foal as shown. Terrific early example from this company in an unusual color treatment.
