1850s-1870s Gold Mourning Locket with Enamel Decoration

Offered for sale: Gold Mourning locket with hand painted enamel plaque of a funeral urn in shades of gray enamel on a black enamel background with white enamel scroll design around the outer edge.

This locket us oval and measures 1 1/8( without the bale.) by 7/8 inches. The bale adds another 1/4 of an inch. The front and back of the locket are gold. The gold front and back are mounted into gold over brass locket hardware. The inside of the locket has 2 oval compartments for pictures with the original glass. The front and back of the locket join together securely.

On the gold front of the locket is the enamel plaque described above surrounded by an engraved chevron design which goes all the way around the outer edge of the front of the locket. The gold back of the locket has an elaborate engraved decoration featuring flowers and leaves. Surrounding the engraved design is a engraved chevron design which matches the one on the front of the locket. The is a plaque for initials to be engraved on the locket back which is currently blank. Looking at the edge of the locket shows the front and back edges of the locket and sandwiched in between the edges of the pictures compartment. The black enamel shows some scuff marks when the locket it tilted under a light.
