Offered for sale: Vintage Sterling Silver earrings by Sando.
These earrings have screw backs. The designs on both the drop and on the portion that fits on the ear are an example of silver overlay work. The drop is round with 1 1/4 inch diameter. On the front of the screw back hardware is a 1/2 circle with scalloped edges on one side. Silver overlay consists of starting with a flat piece of silver and cutting out the back of the piece that is being made. Next a design is cut out of the top piece which is the same size as the back piece. When the 2 pieces are joined together at the edges, you have a cutout design backed by a flat piece of silver. These earrings have a very unusual design. It might be Northwestern Indian but I can not say for sure.
On the back of one of the earrings is 'Sterling' written is an arc with a curved line beneath it and beneath the line the name 'Sando Trade Mark'. On the back of the screw backs are a patent number which I can not quite make out.
The earrings are in excellent vintage condition.
Note:Silver overlay: The silver overlay technique utilizes two flat layers of silver - the first silver layer is utilized as a base and left relatively untouched, while the second layer has intricate designs carved out by the artist. The two silver layers are then fused together to create the characteristic silver overlay style
