Alvin Yellowhorse Stone on Stone Inlay Pendant

Offered for sale: From master jewelry Navajo Alvin Yellowhorse comes this multiple color stone on stone inlay pendant.

The pendant measures 2 inches without the bale by 1 1/8 inches. The bale adds an extra 1/2 inch. Stones and shells featured in this pendant are lapis, MOP, malachite, spiny oyster, sugilite, turquoise and what looks like brown and white agate. The stones are mounted in a raised Sterling Silver mounting which slopes outward from top to bottom. The pendant is made in 2 pieces with hinge in the middle.

Alvin's stone on stone inlay work is amazing. He was one of the first artists to do curved stone on stone work. Running your fingers across the stones, you can not feel where the stones come together. This is done by setting the stones and then filing them down. This is time consuming and delicate work. I have seen some pieces which use a sealing compound to attempt to get a smooth surface. Alvin does not use any sealing compound. It is his skill with the stones that allow him to create such high quality pieces.

Alvin's name and mark are on the back along with 'Sterling'. The pendant is in excellent condition. I do want to point out that there is some scuffs on the silver surface and at one corner bottom right the curve of the silver does not quite follow the curve of the spiny oyster. You need to look at the pendant in high magnification to see it.
