Offered for sale: This pin/pendant is a classic silver overlay sunface kachina in Sterling silver with turquoise and silver decoration.
This pin/pendant measures 3 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches at its widest. It is a wonderful example of silver overlay work. The silver overlay give the pin/pendant a 3 dimensional appearance. Silver overlay of course refers to a piece of jewelry where the piece is actually 2 pieces with a flat back piece covered by a front piece which has cutouts which form the design.
This kachina has a head with a diameter of 1 1/2 inches. In the center is the slightly domed sunface with cutout eyes and mouth surrounded by twisted wire decoration and a row of bezel set round and pear shape turquoise. Silver beads are used between the pieces of turquoise.
The upper body of the kachina is a flat piece of silver covered by a top piece which defines the shape of the upper body including bracelets on the arms and hands which are holding pieces of turquoise. The detail is amazing. Silver beads and pieces of bezel set turquoise are used as decoration.
The lower body of the kachina is also three dimensional complete with legs which are coming out of the bottom of the 'skirt'. The skirt is covered in pear and round shape pieces of bezel set turquoise. What is not covered by turquoise is covered in a design made up of silver beads, twisted wire decoration and japanned background.
The pin/pendant has both a pin and a pendant hook. It is marked 'LMB' 'Sterling'. The 'LMB' I believe is the hallmark of Navajo artist Larry Moses Begay although there are other artists that use the same hallmark. The mark matches the ones in the books including the way the 'M' touches the bottom of the 'L' and the 'B' is slightly raised. Be sure and use 'zoom' mode to check out all the great detail work.
