This ring is... delicious. Rich and sensual, this fire opal is a rare and exquisite gem. Almost magical, this stone seems the very epitome of it's name, changing it's glow in every light, from a bright vivid orange to almost red, all as it sends out flashes of rich, bold fire. The setting is hand made in platinum and each shoulder is set with three marquise cut diamonds, glittering and winking and bathing in the firelight.
This beautifully cut, rectangular cushion cut Fire Opal measures 14.5 mm x 12.2 mm x 8.7 mm deep, which translates to about 6.22 carats. The stone is very clean and clear with a VS2 rating, it contains one unusual flow inclusion. The shoulders are set with 6 marquis cut diamonds, bright and lively, E-F in color and VS1-SI1 in clarity, they weigh about .45 carats altogether. It is currently a size 7, it can be re-sized, but it would have to be done by a jeweler who uses a laser, please inquire about this. The ring weighs 4.4 grams. Made in about 1950, this ring is in excellent condition, it's not marked but I've had it acid tested to verify the metal.
The value of opal as a stone varies greatly over type and quality. The opals of the highest value are those with singular characteristics, such as black opals and fire opals like this one. This particular stone comes from Mexico where most of the larger, gem quality stones were mined. Larger Fire Opals of high quality are increasingly difficult to find anywhere. This is truly a rare stone, a fire opal is of amazing size and stunning color and clarity.
Opals are a sensitive stone, they love to be worn as the warmth and humidity of your hand will keep them from drying out. Please avoid exposure to extreme heat or cold and chemicals, so that this opal will maintain it's brilliance for years to come. They also loose their luster with excessive oil or fingerprints, so you may want to clean this one a bit more often than usual, a soft toothbrush and a little dish soap and a good rinse in warm, but not hot water, and it will be good as new. I recommend keeping it in a small sealed plastic bag when not wearing it and will send one along.
I will tell you that this ring was very hard to photograph and while I think I've gotten the color very close to correct, the stone is just so lively and jumping with internal fire that it was impossible to capture it's true beauty in a still photo. So if you like this one in the photos, you will certainly love it in person. Please let me know if you would like to see a short video of this ring in motion and I will send you a link. This ring comes with a full independent appraisal, the full retail replacement value is $10,000.00 USD. This one is truly a stunner!
