There is a palace 25 miles outside of St. Petersburg in Russia called the Catherine Palace, commissioned by Catherine I in 1717 and rebuilt by her daughter, the Empress Elizabeth in the 1750's; this massive Rococo palace was built with jaw dropping extravagance. Over 250 pounds of gold were used in the guiding of the facade and the roof alone! Inside the palace there was a room called the 'Amber Room'. A room of some 600 square feet, the walls were covered in carved, cut and polished amber in reds, golds and oranges. The amber was backed with gold foil to give it extra glow and was used to form elaborate frames for paintings, huge shield motifs toped with amber swags, and fireplace mantles. Every inch of every wall is covered in mirror, amber or gold. All in all it took 10 years and some 13,000 pounds of amber to create! The amber room was looted during WWII and was never seen again. Parts and pieces have resurfaced here and there, but what happened to most of it will never be known.
Well, it might not be a whole room of amber, but looking at this wonderful Art Deco amber ring might give you some idea of the warm glow such a room must have imparted. A rectangle of smooth rich amber measuring 20 mm x 11.5 mm x 5.75 mm forms the showpiece of this fantastic hand made sterling silver ring. Marked '935' for sterling, it was made around 1920. The ring is currently a size 6.25, but it could be re-sized by a good jeweler. It weighs 5.3 grams. There is a small chip out of one corner of the stone, please look carefully at the photos. It's quite small and doesn't detract from the look of this gorgeous ring.
A lovely little amber room of your own, right there on your finger!
