Alas, poor Mary McCurrish, dead at the tender age of 30. This is as sweet and lovely of a Georgian memorial ring as I have ever had. It is very unusual in that the figure on the front is that of a man, no doubt representing Mary's grieving husband. He is pointing to her grave, standing beneath a weeping willow beside a plinth and obelisk outlined in twisted gold wire. Rows of seed pearls symbolize the tears of the mourners.
The painting is exquisite and detailed. Painted using several tones of sepia made from dissolved (macerated) hair, it is a still life of grief itself. Filled with all the poignancy and romanticism of 18th century life. This ring is completely handmade. The painting is done on an ivory background and set into an 18 karat gold ring with a soft feel and classical hand. The back of the ring is beautifully inscribed with "Mary McCurrish, Ob. 29 Decr 1789 at 30". This wonderful ring is in excellent condition with no reportable flaws whatsoever. It is also unusual in its shape, most rings of this type are done in either a navette shape which is pointed on the top and bottom, or an oval shape. This one showcases a rounded off rectangular shape and is larger than most. It weighs 5.8 grams, is a size 8 US and I would not recommend resizing. The ring is quite large, the polished crystal measures 25 mm north-south and 14 mm across. This is a very important and rare example of a Georgian mourning ring and would make an important addition to any collection.
